Political events occurred recently in Catalunya, such as the 17th August 2017 terrorist attack or the 1st October 2017 referendum have significantly increased the incorporation of user-generated content in TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio Archive . This content is conformed by videos created by users, sent by them, usually through online platforms or social media with some connection to news coverage but also to other events of general interest such as weather phenomena. Televisió de Catalunya has named this type of material User Generated Content (CGU in Catalan) following the English terminology. Many of these videos have acquired editorial value. They have been broadcasted and have served as testimony of reality. The role of the passive audience therefore has shifted since the birth of this content, and we may expect an ever-growing number of participatory users offering media user-generated content. The documentary requirements of this material involves new challenges related to its description and conservation. To accept user-generated content opens up a number of legal concerns, as well as other aspects such as verification. All this has led us, the Archive, to rethink new criteria for the documentary treatment of this material and create a special team to deal with it.
