Raiders of the lost Order 2: Unambiguous global searches using semantic scenes description

Scenes description using only free text in audiovisual collections that are published on the Web, rarely leads to the discovery of appropriate content as searches return many non-relevant results. Content discoverability is often challenging for researchers not fluent in the language of the collection. Unassisted semantic web crawlers may even fail to identify the authorities in the content, fading the dream, that semantic web seemed to bring, of global searches returning meaningful results from different content repositories or Archives.
On the other side, the proliferation of automatic metadata creation tools along with the lack of a standard protocol for describing that metadata are creating a Tower of Babel scenario where specific connectors between the Archive and each metadata provider must be developed.
In this presentation we propose the development of a general purpose ontology for describing audiovisual content which would address all these problems. This could be a step towards the definition of a protocol by the Archive Community orientedtowards unambiguously and globally describing audiovisual content.
